Dating back to 1862, this former primary school closed in 1986 and was converted to a pub in 1988 to become the first public house on the Cholmondeley Estate for over a century. It has been the recipient of many awards ever since. The conversion and subsequent changes have not altered the basic cruciform layout. Beers are mainly sourced from within a 35 mile radius of the pub, in Cheshire and Shropshire. There are three permanent "house beers", two brewed by Weetwood and one by Salopian. The excellent range of gins, including a house gin from Big Hill distillery in Mobberley, reflects a long-standing commitment to gin provision that predates current trends. The food features locally sourced ingredients whenever possible and reflects the seasonal availability of fresh produce. Regular events are hosted including a well-established annual Gin and Music festival and monthly quiz nights. The pub's own classic car club holds regular meets and treasure hunts. Bed & Breakfast in available in the adjacent "Headmaster's House" and the pub's grounds can be used for weddings and similar events. The "Chum" is family friendly and dogs are made welcome with treats on the bar and dog beer for sale.
